OUR STORY
Alonzo Rego is born in Santiago de Goiriz, Bishopric of Mondoñedo, Kingdom of Galicia. Son of Don Francisco Rego and Doña María Dolores, he inherits the commercial vocation of a land shaped by the Atlantic.
Alonzo arrives in Cadiz, the gateway to trade with the Americas. Together with Zales, a Sephardic merchant, he establishes an apothecary of spices, oils, and select products. A mercantile alliance is born that will cross oceans and generations.
At the age of 41, Alonzo Rego married María Dolores Ortega Bustos in the Church of San Miguel, Orizaba. The parish register – preserved to this day – is the first documentary proof of the family in America.
Ismael Rego y Salcedo, Alonzo's grandson, gave structure to the family tradition: a catalog, a method, a name. 1776 was when the vocation began. 1888 was when it was given a name: Zales & Rego.
Seven generations later, the mercantile house is reborn in digital format. The same vocation of Cadiz - to curate, select, present the exceptional - now within reach of the world.

An apothecary was not a shop. It was a place where knowledge met materials. Where a trained eye selected ingredients, where formulations were precise, where each preparation was made with a specific purpose.
This is how we think about food. Not as a product to be moved, but as a substance to be understood, selected, and preserved with the same seriousness that a pharmacist would bring to a preparation.

The story of ZALES & REGO is not marketing mythology. It rests on a single verifiable document: Don Alonzo Rego's marriage certificate, preserved in the parish records of the Church of San Miguel, Orizaba, Veracruz, New Spain. February 1797.
